Networking event #2

Writer: Duna FDuna F

For the second networking assignment, I went to the opening of "The art of Surf" exhibition at VEFA gallery in Torrance (https://vefagallery.com/exhibition/the-art-of-surf). I had heard about the opening through my Art 101 class, as one of the artists from the exhibit, John DeTemple, gave a lecture to the class on Tuesday of that week. The exhibit features a few sculptures, but mostly paintings and digital media surrounding the theme of surfing. I'm not a surfer but it was interesting to see these pieces. I got to talk to John more about his works included in the gallery, as well as talk more about his commercial work. He was very nice and gave me many tips about networking and getting your foot in the door as an artist. I also met a few artists who had heard about the event and checked it out. Kaz Rowe, who is a YouTuber and webcomic artist based in Chicago, Illinois; Sage Allen, who is a graphic designer based in Boston, Massachusetts, and Claire Park, another graphic designer based in Dallas, Texas. We talked about being in different art fields but connected over our shared interest in illustration and art in general. They were all very nice and I would love to continue connecting with them.

Here are a few images I took of the event:
