According to Oxford Languages, a dune is defined as “a mound or ridge of sand or other loose sediment formed by the wind.” I have been folding and saving these paper origami stars since I was twelve years old and what started as a hobby became somewhat of a coping mechanism for myself. When I make a new star, I think of the belief tied to them; if a person were to make a thousand stars, their wish would come true. These stars are the sediment that becomes Dune, the name that was given to me at birth. Like my namesake I am a natural creation of the earth; a thousand particles that have taken shape and formed by the earth’s elements. Humans, in many ways, are like dunes, fabricated from multiple experiences and memories, everchanging, never the same. These stars hold not just possible wishes but a piece of me, where I am free to keep and give away however many I desire.
